Addiction Support Group

Addiction Support Group- 5-week Online session

What is the Addiction Support Group?

The addiction support group is a 5-week online psycho-educational class for adults aged 18 and older. This is an online group with 6-8 participants. The group is designed to teach you practical tools to recognize, understand, and manage patterns of feeling, thinking, and behaving to improve your mental health and recovery.  The addiction support group uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help foster the desired outcome in your life and recovery.  At Hartwell Counselling, our group therapy sessions bring together individuals struggling with the same issues.  Blended with personal therapy and at-home assignments, our sessions propel our clients in a positive direction toward healing.

What is the advantage of being in group therapy?

Being in a group setting allows individuals to develop insight into their issues and gain greater self-awareness by listening to others with similar problems.  It can also enable individuals to improve their communication skills, bond with group members through their shared experiences, and receive honest feedback and outside perspectives from others in the group.

Who will lead the group?

Group sessions are led by our therapists, who seek to prompt discussion, encourage participation, and guide the conversation.  Acting as group leaders, our therapists can also pick up on an individual’s issues in group therapy and in daily life. Ifeatu (Iffy) Nwankwo will facilitate the group. Mrs. Nwankwo holds a master’s degree in clinical mental health.

What is the addiction support group format?

Except for the first session, which is a general orientation to the group, the first half of the session is dedicated to a brief check-in and homework review, while the rest of the session is focused on teaching a new set of skills.

What is the cost of the addiction support group?

Addiction Support Group is an open group comprising 6-8 participants 18 years of age or older. The group cost $600. It runs for 5 weeks online; each session will be 1.5 hours and is facilitated by Ifeatu (Iffy)Nwankwo. This closed group will not accept new registrants after the start date. We require a 150-dollar deposit to hold your spot in the group, and this is refundable, minus $50 for administrative fees, up to 1 week before the start of the group. The remaining fees may be paid in full at the beginning of the group.

What are the topics in the addiction support group?

Topics of conversation during group therapy sessions can vary, but there are many great discussion points to choose from.  The following are a few substance abuse-related issues that are commonly addressed in group therapy:

  • Identify and discuss triggers for substance use.  How have you responded to them in the past? Can you identify any patterns? What kinds of coping strategies can you use to overcome your triggers?

  • Discuss the impact of stinking thinking.  How do specific negative thoughts influence our actions and behavior?

  • Discuss the importance of “letting go” in the context of forgiveness and overcoming resentments.  Is there anyone in your life that you would like to forgive?  How has holding on to grudges and resentments affected your life?

  • What advice would you give to your childhood self? If you could do everything all over again, what, if anything, would you do differently?

  • Discuss mindfulness and living in the present moment.  What things must you accept that you cannot change? What are the benefits of living in the present moment?

  • Where do you stand in terms of your journey of recovery?  Discuss aspects of healing you feel you have accomplished and aspects of recovery you would like to achieve in the future.

  • What are your maladaptive habits? Discuss ways to replace habits with healthier ones.

What if I need to miss a group?

Because so much information is covered in each group session, regular and consistent attendance is strongly recommended. You may still participate in the group even if you know you will be absent for one or more sessions. Please note that the full fee for the group will still apply in such cases.
